Van Gogh and Expressionism, edited by Jill Lloyd and Michael Peppiatt, is an illustrated exhibition catalogue that explores the profound influence of Vincent van Gogh on the development of Expressionism in Europe.

The book combines scholarly essays and high-quality reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints to trace the connection between Van Gogh’s expressive use of color, brushwork, and emotional intensity and the later Expressionist movements in Germany, Austria, and beyond. It examines how artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, and Franz Marc drew inspiration from Van Gogh’s ability to convey inner feeling and psychological depth through vivid, dynamic imagery.

In addition to art analysis, the volume situates Van Gogh’s work in its historical and cultural context, highlighting how his posthumous reputation shaped early twentieth-century modernism. Essays also discuss the interplay between Van Gogh’s personal experiences, artistic innovations, and the Expressionists’ goals of capturing emotional reality rather than photographic accuracy.

In short:
The book demonstrates how Van Gogh’s pioneering approach to color, form, and emotional expression directly influenced the Expressionist movement, offering both a visual and scholarly exploration of this artistic legacy.
