Kevin Cummins (born July 14, 1953) is an acclaimed British music and portrait photographer celebrated as one of the definitive visual archivists of modern rock and pop culture. Born in Manchester, England, Cummins studied photography in Salford before emerging in the mid-1970s to document the region's burgeoning punk and post-punk scenes. He established a 25-year association with the New Musical Express (NME)—serving ten years as its chief photographer—where his imagery played a central role in framing the visual identities of the "Madchester," Britpop, and Cool Britannia eras. Cummins is widely famous for his striking, candid portraiture of music icons, including Joy Division, The Smiths, Oasis, David Bowie, Patti Smith, and the Sex Pistols. In addition to his editorial work for publications like The Face, Vogue, and The Observer, he was a founding contributor to City Life magazine, has published numerous photobooks—such as The Smiths and Beyond and Oasis: The Masterplan—and has had his work acquired by major collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
