LIFE Magazine: 150 Years of Photography (Fall 1988) is a special anniversary edition published by LIFE magazine that celebrates the history and power of photography from its beginnings in the mid-19th century up through the late 20th century. This issue compiles a curated selection of influential images, essays, and features designed to show how photography has shaped our understanding of the world and documented pivotal moments in history.

The issue is organized into thematic sections that trace key developments and breakthroughs in photographic practice and impact. It includes:

  • Historical milestones in photography, from early technical innovations to the medium’s maturation.

  • Iconic photographs and classic masters whose work has left an enduring imprint on culture and public consciousness.

  • Images that played a role in changing public opinion or influencing how people view major events.

  • Explorations of portraiture, photojournalism, war photography, and art photography—showing how different photographic genres capture human experience.

  • Features on the evolution of photographic tools and techniques, including landmark cameras and advances in how images are made.

  • Sections on specialized fields like fashion, sports, science, and nature photography, demonstrating the breadth of the medium’s application.

Throughout the issue, LIFE uses its rich editorial perspective and access to photographic archives to reflect on how photographs have recorded history, influenced public perception, and shaped cultural memory.
