Annie Leibovitz: Photographs (published by Pantheon/Rolling Stone Press in 1983) is the first major monograph of American photographer Annie Leibovitz’s work, bringing together a wide-ranging visual survey of her early career, primarily from her years as chief photographer for Rolling Stone magazine.

The book is a large-format, illustrated collection of full-page color and black-and-white photographs showcasing many of the striking portraits and documentary images that helped establish Leibovitz’s reputation in the 1970s and early ’80s. These include iconic celebrity portraits—musicians, actors, writers, and cultural figures—many of which first appeared in Rolling Stone during that magazine’s heyday.

Introduced by writer Tom Wolfe and featuring a conversation between Leibovitz and David Felton, the book doesn’t follow a traditional narrative text but instead lets the images speak for themselves, illustrating Leibovitz’s bold use of color, inventive compositions, and ability to capture both intimacy and personality in her subjects.

Highlights of the photographs include memorable depictions of rock stars and actors—such as members of the Rolling Stones, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and other prominent figures of the era—presented with a blend of glamour, candidness, and psychological depth that became a hallmark of Leibovitz’s work.

Overall, the book serves both as an introduction to Leibovitz’s early artistic vision and as a visual document of American popular culture in the 1970s and early 1980s, capturing the artists, musicians, and personalities who defined that period.
