Brücke: The Birth of Expressionism in Dresden and Berlin, 1905–1913 by Reinhold Heller and collaborators is a comprehensive study of the German expressionist group Die Brücke, which played a central role in the early 20th-century Expressionist movement.

The book documents the group’s formation in Dresden in 1905, its relocation to Berlin, and its artistic activities until 1913. Through essays, archival materials, and over 200 reproductions of paintings, prints, and drawings, it examines the work of key members such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Erich Heckel. Heller and his co-authors explore how Die Brücke artists sought to break from academic tradition, emphasizing vivid color, bold forms, and emotional intensity to depict modern life and the human figure. The book also addresses the group’s philosophical and cultural influences, including interest in primitivism, social critique, and urban life.

In short:
This volume provides a detailed account of Die Brücke’s role in shaping Expressionism, combining historical context, critical essays, and rich visual documentation to trace the movement’s origins in Dresden and Berlin, Germany.
