In the late 1960s, he emerged as a central figure in the British photographic community, serving as the first Director of Photography at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts and as the founding editor of the pioneering magazines Creative Camera and Album. Seeking advanced studies, Jay moved to the United States to study at the University of New Mexico under Beaumont Newhall and Van Deren Coke. He established the photographic studies program at Arizona State University, where he taught the history and criticism of photography as a Professor of Art History for 25 years. A prolific writer and lecturer, Jay authored over 20 books and 400 articles—such as Cyanide and Spirits and Negative/Positive: A Philosophy of Photography—while maintaining a lifelong practice behind the lens, famously amassing thousands of candid portraits and verbal snapshots of his fellow photographers.
