Andreas Feininger (1906–1999) was a French-born American photographer, author, and educator renowned for his graphic, structural imagery of New York City and his rigorous scientific approach to the natural world. The son of acclaimed painter Lyonel Feininger, he grew up in Germany and trained as a cabinetmaker and architect at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau before working as an architect in Hamburg and Paris. After moving to Sweden, Feininger turned to photography full-time, developing specialized cameras and telephoto lenses to capture landscapes and cityscapes with remarkable clarity and scale. Following his emigration to the United States in 1939, he joined the staff of LIFE magazine in 1943, where he produced more than 300 photo essays over a two-decade tenure. Beyond his photojournalism, Feininger was an extraordinarily influential writer on photography, publishing over 50 instructional manuals, monographs, and textbooks—including The Complete Photographer—that shaped post-war photographic education.
