Harper & Row, 1954. [Ylla (1911–1955), whose real name was Camilla Koffler, was considered one of the most accomplished photographers of animals in the world and published many books of her work, most intended for children. She died tragically after falling from a jeep while photographing a bullock cart race in India.] Ex-library, well read, a few pages with tears (one with tape repair), last page has been replaced with tipped-in photocopy on archival paper.  Summary:

Two Little Bears, published in 1954, is a classic photographic picture book by the renowned animal photographer Ylla(Camilla Koffler). It is celebrated for its pioneering use of expressive, candid animal photography to tell a structured narrative for children.

The Narrative Plot

The story follows two adventurous bear cubs who ignore their mother’s warnings and wander away from their home in the mountains. As they explore the world around them, they encounter various forest creatures—including a crow, a squirrel, and a woodchuck—and struggle with the physical challenges of the wilderness. Eventually, the realization of being lost sets in, leading to a suspenseful wait for their mother to find them.

Key Features

  • Anthropomorphic Storytelling: Unlike a documentary, the book uses Ylla’s photographs to assign human-like emotions and dialogue to the cubs, creating a relatable coming-of-age story about curiosity and independence.

  • Visual Style: The book is famous for its high-quality, mid-century black-and-white photography. Ylla’s ability to capture the "personalities" and distinct facial expressions of the bears was considered a significant technical and artistic achievement at the time.

  • Naturalistic Setting: While the story is fictional, the images were shot in a way that emphasizes the raw beauty and scale of the natural world, contrasting the smallness of the cubs with the vastness of the woods.

Significance

Two Little Bears remains a hallmark of the "photographic storybook" genre. It demonstrated that still photography could be as effective as illustration in children's literature, provided the photographer possessed the patience and skill to capture genuine animal behavior. It stands as the most enduring work of Ylla’s career, which was tragically cut short shortly after its publication.
