Thomas James "Tom" Maloney (1904–1988) was an American advertising executive, publisher, and editor best known as the creator and publisher of U.S. Camera magazine and its long-running companion publication, the U.S. Camera Annual.Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Maloney studied at the U.S. Naval Academy before establishing his own successful advertising agency, T.J. Maloney, Inc., in Manhattan during the 1930s. In 1935, with the encouragement and collaboration of prominent figures like photographer Edward Steichen, he launched the first U.S. Camera Annual, followed by the launch of U.S. Camera magazine in 1938. Through these publications, as well as later ventures, Maloney created a major platform for both commercial and fine art photography, showcasing landmark work by iconic photographers ranging from Edward Weston and Ansel Adams to Robert Frank and Bert Stern. He managed the U.S. Camera brand for decades before the publication evolved into U.S. Camera & Travel, leaving behind a legacy as a key figure in popularizing mid-20th-century photographic art and photojournalism.
