George A. Tice (1938–2025) was an American fine art photographer and master printmaker celebrated for his meticulous, large-format black-and-white studies of the American landscape and urban architecture. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Tice began exploring photography at age fourteen and briefly served as a U.S. Navy photographer before embarking on a career dedicated to documenting disappearing vestiges of American life. He gained national renown for his extensive, decades-long project Urban Landscapes, which captured small-town diners, water towers, and industrial vistas across his home state of New Jersey, alongside celebrated series exploring Amish communities (Fields of Peace) and historical American sites. Famous for his darkroom craftsmanship—particularly his mastery of gelatin silver and platinum/palladium printing techniques—Tice published over fifteen photobooks and was honored with major retrospectives at institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the International Center of Photography.

Published in 1975 by Rutgers University Press, George A. Tice: Photographs, 1953–1973 is a comprehensive twenty-year retrospective monograph showcasing the early career and artistic development of photographer George A. Tice. Featuring an introduction by influential gallery owner Lee D. Witkin and over 100 finely reproduced plates, the volume traces Tice's evolution from his formative 35mm and naval documentary roots in the 1950s to his mastery of large-format contact printing in gelatin silver and platinum/palladium. The book highlights several of his celebrated thematic projects, including intimate studies of rural Pennsylvania Amish communities, the architectural character and industrial vistas of New Jersey towns, and atmospheric coastal landscapes from Maine. Serving as a seminal record of Tice's craftsmanship and commitment to preserving vanishing Americana, the retrospective established his reputation as a key figure in modern American documentary and fine art photography.
