John Loengard (1934–2020) was an influential American photojournalist, picture editor, author, and educator whose career was deeply intertwined with Life magazine for over half a century. Born in New York City, Loengard developed a passion for photography in his youth and landed his first assignment for Life while a senior at Harvard College in 1956. He joined the magazine’s staff in 1961, capturing iconic assignments—such as his famous 1964 portraits of the Beatles in a Miami pool—defined by graphic clarity, candid timing, and natural light. Following Life's suspension as a weekly publication in 1972, Loengard played a central role in Time Inc.'s editorial projects, helping launch People magazine in 1974 and driving Life's rebirth as a monthly publication in 1978, where he served as picture editor until 1987. In his later decades, Loengard authored ten influential books on photojournalism, history, and practice—including Celebrating the Negative and Life Photographers: What They Saw—and taught at institutions like the International Center of Photography, solidifying his legacy as both a master photographer and a steward of the medium before his death at age 85.
Pictures Under Discussion (1987) is the debut book by acclaimed photojournalist and Life magazine picture editor John Loengard. Hailed as one of photojournalism's most influential figures, Loengard uses this volume to pull back the curtain on the craft of capturing iconic imagery.
Key Structural & Thematic Focuses
The book uses a unique, intentional layout—featuring an oblong format where a single duotone black-and-white photograph is presented on the right-hand page, and Loengard’s personal commentary or "discussion" faces it on the left.
-
A Diverse Portfolio: The book compiles 85 high-quality duotone plates. While highly celebrated for his bold, graphic, and intimate portraits of legendary personalities (such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Louis Armstrong, and Judy Garland), the collection also spans action shots, street photography, children, musicians, landscapes, and still lifes.
-
The Stories Behind the Lens: Rather than just displaying a retrospective gallery, Loengard provides the technical and situational context for each photo. He details his working methods, the spontaneous decisions made during assignments, his interactions with notable subjects, and the specific aesthetic choices regarding framing and lighting.
-
The Philosophy of Photojournalism: Beyond technical specifications, Loengard addresses the broader responsibilities of a magazine photographer. He reflects on what makes a photograph memorable, how to handle the intrusive nature of the camera, and how to find surprising depth in everyday moments.
Core Takeaway
Pictures Under Discussion serves as both a masterclass portfolio and an educational resource. By pairing striking visual documentation with candid, insightful text, Loengard transforms a collection of images into a profound meditation on the art, craft, and ethics of photojournalism.
