Core Themes and Content
-
The Artistic Philosophy of Wellness: The book is anchored in Lauder's belief that viewing images of beauty can serve as a meditative, therapeutic force for emotional and physical healing. It explores how isolating a harmonious visual moment can offer a sense of order and peace in a chaotic world, directly mirroring her extensive philanthropic work in health and wellness.
-
A Global Landscape Portfolio: The core of the volume consists of lush, full-color photographs taken during Lauder’s extensive travels across the globe. Her imagery spans crisp, minimalist snowscapes in Aspen, vivid flora in southwestern deserts, the rolling hills of Tuscany, and quiet reflection pools in classic European gardens, treating each environment with a sharp focus on saturated hues and balance.
-
Architectural and Textural Details: Moving beyond traditional sweeping vistas, the collection features a heavy emphasis on geometric abstraction and intimate macro details. Lauder trains her lens on the unexpected patterns found in everyday environments, such as the rhythmic lines of window panes, the symmetry of a spiral staircase, or the complex textures of weathered stone and plant leaves.
-
Personal Insights and Context: Rather than presenting a silent gallery, the images are accompanied by Lauder's personal anecdotes and reflections. She provides readers with intimate backstories regarding where and why each photo was taken, her emotional state at the time, and technical details regarding how she chased specific natural light conditions to capture the perfect frame.
An Eye for Beauty serves as an elegant testament to Evelyn H. Lauder's keen visual instincts, offering a peaceful, curated journey that positions photography as an essential tool for mindfulness and a celebration of the natural world.
Evelyn Lauder (1936–2011) was an Austrian-born American corporate executive, philanthropist, and accomplished fine-art photographer who left an indelible mark on global women's health and the cosmetics industry. Born Evelyn Hausner in Vienna, her family fled Nazi occupation in 1938, eventually arriving in New York City, where she graduated from Hunter College. In 1959, she married Leonard A. Lauder, joining her mother-in-law's burgeoning cosmetics startup, The Estée Lauder Companies. Over a dedicated fifty-year career, she rose to Senior Corporate Vice President, heavily driving the corporation's success by developing best-selling global fragrances, orchestrating initial sales training systems, and crucially helping to create, name, and design the iconic Clinique brand. Beyond her immense business acumen, Lauder is globally recognized as an advocate for women's health; in 1992, she co-created the universal Pink Ribbon symbol and launched the Estée Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Campaign, followed by her founding of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in 1993, which has raised over a billion dollars for medical science. A woman of varied talents, she pursued a lifelong passion for photography, publishing two acclaimed monographs and exhibiting her landscape and nature photography internationally.
