Baron Wolman (1937–2020) was an iconic American photographer best remembered as the first chief photographer for Rolling Stone magazine, capturing the visual essence of the 1960s counterculture and rock music revolution. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Wolman studied philosophy at Northwestern University and developed an interest in photojournalism while serving in military intelligence in West Berlin. In 1967, he met founder Jann Wenner in San Francisco and joined the fledgling Rolling Stone, where his informal, candid portraits and intimate live imagery—featuring legends like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa, and The Who—became the publication's signature aesthetic. After leaving the magazine in 1970, Wolman founded Rags, an innovative counterculture fashion magazine, documented the 1969 Woodstock festival, and published several photo books ranging from sports to aerial photography, cementing his status as one of rock-and-roll’s most definitive visual chroniclers.
