Robert Weingarten (born 1941) is an American fine-art photographer based in Malibu, California, celebrated for his innovative conceptual series, high-resolution digital composite techniques, and explorations of light, color, and memory.Born in Brooklyn, New York, Weingarten initially enjoyed a successful decades-long career in finance before transitioning full-time to photographic art in the 1990s, earning the distinction of Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2001. Weingarten gained critical recognition through serial, conceptual projects that push the boundary between traditional realism and painterly abstraction, including his 6:30 A.M. series (2003)—capturing the changing atmospheric light over the Pacific Ocean from his window at the exact same minute each morning—and his Palette Series(2004–2006), featuring macro, abstract photographic studies of famous contemporary artists' palettes and workspaces. In his acclaimed project Portraits Without People (exhibited as The Portrait Unbound at the High Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution), Weingarten abandoned traditional figuration to craft composite, translucent visual "biographies" of prominent figures made entirely of overlaid digital images representing their personal histories and memories.
