Oblong hardcover, red cloth, ex-library, cutout at base of newly protected dust jacket spine replaced with black plastic to disguise void, card pocket remnant on rear flyleaf, discard stamp whited out on title page, tape evidence on covers from former dust jacket protector. An attractively restored copy.

Audrey Topping's grandparents founded a Lutheran mission in Fancheng. Her father, Chester A. Ronning, who contributed a text to this book, was born there and grew up in Canada, where he became a diplomat.  Audrey Topping was a student in China in 1948, when the civil war forced her departure.  The photos in this book were made when she returned while working as a photographer for the NBC News documentary, The Forbidden City.  Audrey Topping also was the author of Journey Between Two Chinas.
