Chronicle/ in association with the nternational Center of Photography, 1993. First printing; hardcover with protected dust jacket. Fine/fine with just a touch of yellowing at edges of pages. With an essay by Miles Barth and introduction by Dorothy Norman.  Includes photographs by Norman of her mentor and close associate, Alfred Stieglitz, as well as photographs by Stieglitz of Norman. Also portraits of many luminaries in Norman's circle, including Sherwood Anderson, Bernard Berenson, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Bowles, Bertolt Brecht, Martin Buber, John Cage, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Chagall, Harold Clurman, Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, Charles Demuth, Theodore Dreiser, Marcel Duchamp, Albert Einstein, Louis Fischer, Waldo Frank, Indira Gandhi, Morris Graves, Elia Kazan, Beatrice Lamb, Carlo Levi, Andre Malraux, John Marin, Thomas Mann, Lewis Mumford, Jawaharlal Nehru, Isamu Noguchi, Jacques Prevert, Luise Rainer, Hans Richter, Stephen Spender, Gerald Sykes, Edgard Varese, and Richard Wright. Plus photographs of An American Place; New York City; India; Cape Cod; flowers, et al.  Copy of Norman’s 1997 obituary from the New York Times laid in.  About the book:  “Dorothy Norman was an editor, publisher, columnist, author and photographer. She was close to Alfred Stieglitz for a number of years. This is the first monograph of Norman's photography, which includes her portraits, landscapes and architectural images. Edited, with an essay by Miles Barth; photographs and an introduction by Dorothy Norman; preface by Edward Abrahams. Includes a chronology, annotated list of portraits and bibliography. 179 pages; profusely illustrated with b&w plates; 6.25 x 8.25 inches.”  In addition to the activities mentioned above, Norman was the editor and publisher of the journal, Twice a Year, a founding member of New York City's Liberal Party, and served on the boards of the New York Urban Leagued the National Urban League.  She also was a founder and chaired the American Emergency Food Committee for India and the American Citizen's Committee for Economic Aid Abroad. Her photographs are at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.  This book is relatively uncommon in hardcover, especially in this fine condition.
