Steve McCurry (born April 23, 1950) is an iconic American photojournalist and fine art photographer celebrated for his vibrant, emotionally evocative color imagery documenting human culture, ancient traditions, and global conflicts. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he studied theater arts at Pennsylvania State University before embarking on a career as a freelance photographer. His breakthrough occurred in 1979 when he disguised himself in native clothing to cross the border from Pakistan into rebel-controlled Afghanistan, smuggling out rolls of film sewn into his clothes just before the Soviet invasion—a feat that earned him the Robert Capa Gold Medal. A member of Magnum Photos since 1986, McCurry is best known for his 1984 portrait Afghan Girl (Sharbat Gula), which became one of the most recognized covers in National Geographic history. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has covered major international conflicts—including the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, and the Afghan Civil War—while producing dozens of acclaimed photobooks such as The Imperial Way (1985), South Southeast (2000), and Untold: The Stories Behind the Photographs(2013). Recognized with numerous accolades, including four top prizes from the World Press Photo contest and the Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Medal, McCurry remains one of the world's most influential contemporary masters of visual storytelling.
