The author, who had been the U.S. Army’s Chief Historian of the European Theatre during World War II, flew to Israel after the cease fire and interviewed many Israeli military personnel, including generals Moshe Dayan, Rab Yariv, and Itzhak Rabin.  Book provides history of Israel, illustrated narrative of the war, and chronology.  Photographs in color and black-and-white by Magnum photographers Cornell Capa, Charles Harbutt, Micha Bar-Am, and Leonard Freed, as well as others, including Charles Phelps Cushing, Fred Ward, Anthony Howarth, and Mark St. Gil.
