Published posthumously in 1978 by Image West Press, An Oregon Experience is a monograph featuring a collection of black-and-white landscape photographs by Bernard Freemesser. Bernard Freemesser (1926–1977) was an influential American photographer and educator who played a key role in expanding photography into the fine arts curriculum in Oregon. Born in Rochester, New York, he began his career in photojournalism before taking a position at the University of Oregon in 1955. A transformative meeting with Brett Weston convinced him to abandon 35mm photojournalism for large-format cameras, shifting his artistic focus toward the dramatic natural landscapes of the American West. During his tenure as a professor at the University of Oregon, Freemesser built a renowned photography program, organized the Oregon Photography Workshops, and hosted informal home critique sessions that inspired a generation of Northwest photographers. He passed away from a brain tumor in 1977 at the age of 51.
