Summary: “Kutuuka” is a photographic and artistic collection that pairs portraits of orphans in Uganda with their own drawings and descriptions of their dreams. The book was created to benefit the charity Change the Truth, which Feinstein founded to support children left parentless — often because of AIDS or war — in Uganda. Through photographs, the book gives faces to some of the estimated millions of orphans in Uganda — children who have lost one or both parents and who often suffer from loss of childhood, lack of education or basic care, and social stigma. But “Kutuuka” goes beyond documenting hardship: it captures hope. The drawings and written dreams from the children are testaments to their resilience, imagination, and longing for a future beyond their difficult circumstances. By humanizing children who might otherwise be reduced to statistics, the book challenges readers to see orphans not as anonymous victims, but as individuals — with hopes, fears, and creative spirits. It invites compassion and support, shedding light on the work of Change the Truth, which provides food, medical care, schooling, and emotional support to many such children.

Gloria Baker Feinstein is an American fine art and portrait photographer, author, and philanthropist known for her intimate, evocative visual narratives. Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, she earned a BA in Communication Arts and an MA in Photography and Graphic Design from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After operating The Baker Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri, for a decade to champion 20th-century fine art photography, Feinstein returned to her own creative practice, producing acclaimed photographic books such as Convergence (2002), Among the Ashes (2004), Kutuuka (2009), and Some Grandmas (2015). Her work often explores personal memory, human vulnerability, and community, published regularly in outlets like The Sun Magazine and held in permanent collections including the High Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. From 2007 to 2019, she also served as the founding director of Change the Truth, a non-profit organization that provided educational opportunities and support to Ugandan orphans.
