Observer, 1980.  First edition.  Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, 1980–1981. Introduction by Patrick O’Donovan. Cloth, fine with very good protected dust jacket that has some wrinkles near the bottom front cover.  120 full page photographs selected from the photographer Jane Bown’s past 30 years of work. Portraits of newsworthy people include Mick Jagger; Henri Cartier-Bresson; Bertrand Russell; Edith Sitwell; The Beatles; British Royalty; King Faisal; Cardinal Mindzenty; Indira Gandhi; Richard Nixon; Henry Moore; Dylan Thomas; Albert Schweitzer; Jean Cocteau; Vanessa Redgrave; James Baldwin; Tennessee Williams; Samuel Beckett; Elizabeth Taylor; Noel Coward; Richard Burton; Yevgeny Yevtushenko; Marcel Marceau; Mother Theresa, Cecil Beaton; Kim Philby; Enoch Powell; Jeremy Thorpe; Edward Heath; Liza Minelli; J.B. Priestly; Jeanne Moreau; et al.  Photographs of events in the UK are reproduced, such as Derby Day, Windsor Horse Show, Tommy Steele’s Wedding, Mothers’ Union Parade, et al.  Other photographs include unidentified people such as a street musician, nannies, tourists, nuns, and others.  In addition, the volume provides examples of Bown’s still life photos and photos of animals. Jane Bown studied photography at the Guildford School of Photography and after a career as a child photographer, joined the staff of The Observer in 1950.
