Otto Litzel (1901–1981) was a German-born American photographer, author, lecturer, and darkroom innovator celebrated for his mastery of darkroom techniques, abstract composition, and instructional scholarship. Active primarily in New York and New Jersey, Litzel developed a distinct fine-art style during the mid-20th century, producing serene architectural studies of the New York City skyline alongside close-up, abstract explorations of natural textures—such as cracked ice, wet sand, tree bark, and water ripples—reminiscent of the work of Edward Weston and Minor White. Beyond his exhibition prints, Litzel made substantial contributions to photographic education through his writing and lectures, publishing influential instructional books including Darkroom Magic (1967) and Litzel on Photographic Composition(1974). His legacy endures as a bridging figure between classical silver-gelatin printing and creative darkroom experimentation, offering foundational guidance on tone, texture, and visual design that inspired generations of mid-century art photographers.
