Helmut Gernsheim (1913–1995) and Alison Gernsheim (1911–1969) were a pioneering husband-and-wife team of photo historians, collectors, and authors who played a foundational role in establishing photography as an academic and artistic discipline. Based in London for much of their collaborative career, they spent decades researching the medium's origins and elevating its status from a commercial craft to a fine art.

Their joint legacy is defined by several landmark achievements:

• Discovering the First Photograph: In 1952, after an exhaustive search, the Gernsheims tracked down and rediscovered Joseph Nicéphore Niépce’s 1826/27 heliograph, View from the Window at Le Gras, establishing it as the world's earliest surviving permanent photograph.

• Foundational Scholarship: Together, they authored seminal texts that shaped the historiography of the medium. Their monumental book, The History of Photography from the Earliest Attempts in the Camera Obscura to the Beginning of the Modern Era (1955), became the definitive reference work of its time, supplemented by pioneering biographies of figures like Lewis Carroll, Roger Fenton, and L.J.M. Daguerre.

• The Gernsheim Collection: They amassed a world-class archive of more than 33,000 historic photographs, 4,000 books, and hundreds of pieces of early apparatus. In 1963, this invaluable collection was acquired by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, where it remains a cornerstone for global photographic research.
