Roger Fenton (1819–1869) was a pioneering English photographer regarded as a central figure in 19th-century British photography and one of the world's first official war photographers. Educated in law and fine art painting in London and Paris, Fenton turned to photography in the early 1850s after discovering the newly emerging medium. In 1853, he co-founded the Photographic Society of London (later the Royal Photographic Society) and was subsequently appointed the first official photographer of the British Museum. He achieved international acclaim in 1855 when he was commissioned to document the Crimean War, producing over 300 seminal photographs—including his famous image The Valley of the Shadow of Death—that created the first extensive visual record of modern warfare. Over a brief yet prolific twelve-year career, Fenton mastered architectural, landscape, royal portraiture, and Orientalist genre photography before abruptly selling his equipment and returning to the practice of law in 1862.
