Robert Doisneau (1912–1994) was a celebrated French photographer and a champion of humanist photography who became world-renowned for his playful, charming, and empathetic street photography. Born in a suburb of Paris, he initially studied engraving and lithography before turning to commercial and industrial photography—including a stint as a staff photographer for Renault from which he was famously fired for tardiness. During World War II, he served as a soldier and used his graphic skills to forge identity papers for the French Resistance. Following the war, Doisneau joined the Rapho agency and devoted himself to capturing everyday life, working-class neighborhoods, schoolchildren at play, and lovers on the streets of Paris. His iconic 1950 photograph Le Baiser de l'Hôtel de Ville (The Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville) cemented his legacy as a master of capturing fleeting, poetic moments of human connection.
