Patrick Demarchelier (1943–2022) was a self-taught French photographer who became one of the most influential forces in fashion history. Raised near Paris, he discovered photography at age 17 when his stepfather gifted him an Eastman Kodak camera. After learning darkroom techniques and working as a studio assistant in Paris, he moved to New York City in 1975 to launch an independent international career. Over the next four decades, Demarchelier became a mainstay of luxury advertising and top fashion magazines. In 1989, he gained world recognition when Princess Diana personally appointed him as her official portrait photographer, making him the first non-British official royal photographer. Named an Officer in the French Order of Arts and Letters in 2007, Demarchelier continued photographing world-renowned models, actors, and fashion collections until his passing in March 2022 at age 78.
