William Wegman (born 1943) is an acclaimed American conceptual artist and photographer best known for his whimsical, deadpan portraits featuring his iconic Weimaraner dogs posed in elaborate costumes, human disguises, and surreal sets. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Wegman initially trained as a painter, earning a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, before turning to video, performance, and photography in the early 1970s. His long-standing artistic partnership began with his first dog, Man Ray, who became a central figure in early conceptual art circles, and later continued with Fay Ray and her descendants, largely captured on large-format 20x24 Polaroid film. Blending conceptual rigor with accessible humor, Wegman's work spans children's books, television segments for Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, and major gallery exhibitions, securing his place in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
