• Michael Ruetz (born 1940) is a celebrated German photojournalist, fine-art photographer, and academic renowned for his documentation of post-war European socio-political history and his pioneering long-term conceptual photography. Initially studying sinology and journalism before working as a staff photographer for Stern magazine from 1969 to 1973, Ruetz captured iconic images of the 1968 West German student movement, prominent literary figures of Group 47, and political shifts across Cold War Europe. He subsequently turned to large-format visual studies and conceptual long-term projects, most notably Timescapes (Eye on Time), a multi-decade photographic study in which he repeatedly re-photographed identical geographical and architectural locations across Europe to chronicle physical decay, urban transformation, and environmental change over time. A former professor of communication design at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) and a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin, Ruetz has published over thirty monographs—including Apropos Brecht and Windeye—and his extensive archive was acquired by the Academy of Arts, Berlin, cementing his position as a crucial visual chronicler of modern European cultural memory.
