Marc Riboud (1923–2016) was an acclaimed French photojournalist best known for his extensive, humanistic documentation of Asia and his long association with Magnum Photos, which he joined in 1953 at the invitation of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. After fighting in the French Resistance during World War II and working briefly as an engineer, Riboud dedicated his life to photography, traveling the globe to capture pivotal geopolitical shifts as well as quiet, poetic moments of everyday life. He was among the first Western photographers allowed into post-revolution China in 1957, later publishing seminal photo-essays on China, North Vietnam, and the Soviet Union. Riboud produced some of the 20th century's most enduring images—including Painter on the Eiffel Tower (1953) and The Ultimate Confrontation: The Flower and the Bayonet (1967), depicting a young woman offering a flower to armed soldiers outside the Pentagon. Defined by its formal composition, geometric grace, and deep empathy, his work earned numerous international honors, including two Overseas Press Club awards and a Sony World Photography Lifetime Achievement Award, solidifying his legacy as one of photojournalism's greatest visual chroniclers.
