“They Can’t Always Be On,” article with text by Amy Wong, illustrated by James Nachtwey's photographs.  Known for his war photographs, this assignment was quite unusual for Nachtwey.  Very good with some bends and crimps, no marks, complete issue of magazine, includes puzzles and other articles. James Nachtwey (born 1948) is an acclaimed American photojournalist and war photographer revered for his visceral, compassionate, and uncompromising visual documentation of human conflict, social injustice, and humanitarian crises across the globe. Born in Syracuse, New York, and educated at Dartmouth College, Nachtwey was inspired to enter photography by civil rights imagery and Vietnam War coverage, beginning his career as a newspaper photographer in New Mexico before moving to New York City in 1980 to pursue international freelance work. Over four decades, he covered conflicts and catastrophes in dozens of nations—including Northern Ireland, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Rwanda, Bosnia, Chechnya, South Africa, and Afghanistan—as well as the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York. A former member of Magnum Photos and a long-time contract photographer for Time magazine, Nachtwey's stark, highly structured black-and-white and color compositions—featured in major monographs like Inferno (1999) and the Oscar-nominated documentary War Photographer (2001)—have earned him unprecedented acclaim, including five Robert Capa Gold Medals and the TED Prize, cementing his status as one of modern history's most vital visual witnesses.
