Millstone Valley by Elizabeth G. C. Menzies is a historical and photographic study of the Millstone River region in central New Jersey. Published in 1969 by Rutgers University Press, the book combines narrative history with many black-and-white photographs to document the landscape, architecture, and environment of the area.

The book explores the Millstone River Valley, an area that includes communities such as Princeton, Kingston, and Griggstown. Menzies describes how the valley developed from early colonial settlements into a rural farming region and later a suburban landscape. She highlights historic houses, barns, churches, mills, and roads, explaining how they reflect the lives of the people who lived there and the economic activities that shaped the region.

A major theme of the book is the relationship between people and the natural environment. Menzies writes about the valley’s rivers, forests, and farmland and shows how these natural features influenced settlement and transportation routes. Through photographs and commentary, she also records the beauty of the landscape and the traditional buildings that define the area.

Another important idea is preservation. Menzies was concerned that modernization, pollution, and development could damage the valley’s historic sites and natural scenery. Her work documents these places so that their historical and environmental importance would be recognized and protected.

Millstone Valley is both a local history and a visual record of central New Jersey’s Millstone River region. Through historical explanations and photographs, it shows how the valley’s landscape, buildings, and communities developed over time while emphasizing the need to protect the area’s cultural and natural heritage.
