Interpress-Foto III (1966) is the third installment of a prestigious photobook series published by the International Organization of Journalists (IOJ). It serves as a curated anthology of the best international press photography from the mid-1960s, primarily reflecting the artistic and journalistic perspectives of the Eastern Bloc and non-aligned nations.

Core Themes and Content

The 1966 edition is characterized by its "Humanist" approach to photojournalism, focusing on:

  • Global Conflict: Raw coverage of the Vietnam War, highlighting the civilian toll and the intensity of the struggle from a perspective often critical of Western intervention.

  • The Space Race: High-contrast imagery celebrating the technological triumphs of the Soviet and American space programs.

  • Daily Life and Labor: A heavy emphasis on the "dignity of the worker," featuring candid portraits of laborers, farmers, and children across the socialist world.

  • Social Realism: While the book contains artistic and experimental compositions, the primary goal was to use photography as a tool for social truth and political solidarity.

Historical Significance

Unlike Western annuals like World Press Photo, Interpress-Foto provided a unique platform for photographers from the USSR, East Germany, Cuba, and North Vietnam. It remains a significant historical document for those studying Cold War visual culture and the evolution of the "concerned photographer" movement.
