Between Frames: Poems & Photographs by Mark Hillringhouse is a hybrid collection that combines poetry and black-and-white photography to portray a fading, post-industrial American landscape—especially in New Jersey. The book captures scenes such as abandoned theaters, roadside diners, and declining main streets, using them to evoke a “vanishing America” rooted in memory and everyday experience.
Through the interplay of image and text, Hillringhouse explores themes of loss, nostalgia, and quiet beauty amid decay. His work blends personal reflection—family history, guilt, and longing—with broader meditations on time, place, and the emotional weight of ordinary environments. The result is an atmospheric, elegiac portrait of a world suspended between past and present, intimacy and emptiness.
