ARCO,1983. 1st edition, red cloth, ex-library, fine newly protected dust jacket without spine label, card pocket neatly removed from rear flyleaf, evidence of dust jacket protector having been taped to book. Born in 1919, Fresco became a photographer at age 19. After WWII military service followed by several photojournalist jobs, Fresco joined the Mirror in 1958 and was chief sports photographer for more than 30 years, although he also took other subjects. Asked about his greatest assignments, he said: “I have two most memorable – the first, of course, England winning the World Cup in 1966, the second achieving an ambition to cover a world heavyweight title fight in America – the year 1971 - the fight two unbeaten heavyweight champions of the world Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in Madison Square Garden.” In this autobiography, Fresco details his early life, followed by profusely illustrated chapters on Royalty, Sport, War (in Israel and Cyprus), People, and Places. He discusses his favorite photograph, which was taken of Pope John Paul. Among other famous people depicted, the book includes photos of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip, Ronald Reagan, Princess Diana, Prince Charles, Margaret Thatcher, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles, Sir Winston Churchill, Lord Mountbattan, Idi Amin, Billie Jean King, Ilie Nastase,Virginia Wade, Johnny Rotten, Mother Teresa, Richard Burton, et al. Note: This Monte Fresco is not to be confused with his nephew of the same name, also a photographer, born in 1934.
