Eve Arnold (1912–2012) was an American photojournalist who gained prominence as one of the first female photographers to join the prestigious Magnum Photos agency, becoming a full member in 1957. Born in Philadelphia, she first began experimenting with photography in 1946 while working at a photo-finishing plant and later honed her craft under Alexei Brodovitch at the New School for Social Research in New York. Known for her intimate, naturalistic approach that avoided heavy studio lighting or intrusive setups, Arnold captured iconic portraits of world figures and celebrities—most notably Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth II, and Malcolm X—alongside compassionate documentary projects depicting migrant workers, South African shanty towns, and everyday life in China, Mongolia, and the Soviet Union. Later relocating to England, she published numerous acclaimed photobooks—such as The Unretouched Woman(1976) and In China (1980)—and earned widespread international recognition, including an honorary OBE, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers, and being named a Master Photographer by the International Center of Photography.
