Alinari, 1998. Issued without ISBN number. Presumed 1st edition. Not to be confused with 2010 reprint that has an ISBN number.  80 pages with photos of workers in Tuscany, with a separate chapter of photos of women at work.  A wide variety of work environments are included in these old black-and-white photos.  Includes an interior view of the Alinari portrait studio in Florence. Text in Italian by Wladimiro Settimelli.  Like new in stiff French wraps with custom-made polyester jacket.  Summary:

Gli Antichi Mestieri (The Ancient Trades) is a poignant visual history curated from the prestigious Alinari Archives in Florence. It serves as a photographic window into the late 19th and early 20th centuries, documenting a world of labor that has largely vanished.

Core Themes

  • Vanishing Occupations: The book focuses on "lost" professions—such as street water-sellers, charcoal burners, knife grinders, and lace-makers—that were once the backbone of the Italian economy before the Industrial Revolution.

  • The Alinari Legacy: By utilizing the Fratelli Alinari collection (one of the world's oldest photography firms), the book highlights the transition of photography from a technical novelty to a vital tool for sociological documentation.

  • Social Reality: Rather than romanticizing poverty, the images provide a raw look at the physical toll of manual labor and the ingenuity of workers who relied on primitive tools and sheer endurance.

Visual and Narrative Style

The book is structured to let the images lead the narrative. Each photograph is more than just a portrait; it is a study of context, showing the specific clothing, tools, and urban or rural environments of the era. The accompanying text provides historical background, explaining how these trades functioned and why they eventually became obsolete.

Key Takeaway

This collection is an essential archival record for those interested in Italian social history and the evolution of work. It captures the dignity and hardship of a pre-industrial society just before the "modern" world fundamentally altered the human landscape.
