Herbert Wendell Gleason was a prominent American landscape photographer, lecturer, and pioneer environmentalist who transitioned to photography in midlife after a career as a Congregational minister. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, and educated at Williams College, Gleason dedicated himself fully to professional photography in 1899. He is most renowned for his exhaustive, 38-year visual documentation of Concord, Massachusetts, where he meticulously traced and photographed the landscapes, wildlife, and plants referenced in the writings of Henry David Thoreau—work that ultimately illustrated Houghton Mifflin's authoritative 1906 editions of Thoreau’s writings. Beyond his literary connections, Gleason was a vital figure in the early national park movement. Appointed as an Interior Department Inspector by his close friend Stephen Mather, Gleason hauled heavy camera equipment across thousands of miles to capture the American West, Alaska, and the Canadian Rockies. His sweeping wilderness photography was widely utilized in public advocacy lectures and featured in National Geographic, helping solidify his legacy as a critical chronicler of early 20th-century American conservation.
