Harry Belafonte (1927–2023) was an influential Jamaican-American singer, actor, and civil rights activist who popularized Caribbean music for global audiences and leveraged his stardom to advance international humanitarian causes. Born in Harlem and raised partly in Jamaica, Belafonte rose to fame in the 1950s as the "King of Calypso," with his landmark 1956 album Calypso becoming the first solo LP to sell over a million copies and featuring iconic hits like "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)." A versatile trailblazer, he broke racial barriers in film and television starring in productions such as Carmen Jones (1954) and earned Tony, Grammy, and Emmy awards alongside an Academy Honorary Award. Beyond entertainment, Belafonte was a vital leader and major financier of the Civil Rights Movement, serving as a close confidant to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., helping organize the 1963 March on Washington, and later spearheading anti-apartheid efforts, co-initiating the charity single "We Are the World," and serving as a long-standing UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador until his passing at age 96.
