Marie Cosindas (1923–2017) was a pioneering American fine-art photographer best known for her groundbreaking, painterly use of instant color Polaroid film. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she originally trained as a fashion designer and painter, initially using photography merely to capture reference images before dedicating herself fully to the medium. After studying under Ansel Adams in 1961, Adams recommended her to the Polaroid Corporation in 1962 as one of a select group of artists invited to test their new Polacolor instant film. Cosindas mastered the new medium by meticulously manipulating lighting, development times, and filters to produce rich, saturated still lifes and evocative portraits that drew inspiration from 17th-century European paintings. In 1966, she received a landmark solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York—making her one of the earliest artists and only the second color photographer to be honored with a solo MoMA show—helping cement color photography's legitimacy as a fine art form.
