Published in 1978 by Dover Publications and edited by Marianne Fulton Margolis, Camera Work: A Pictorial Guide is an essential 157-page reference volume that catalogues every visual element published in Alfred Stieglitz’s legendary art journal Camera Work (1903–1917).

The book reproduces all 559 illustrations—including photogravures, color halftones, collotypes, and plates by major Photo-Secessionists and European modernists such as Edward Steichen, Clarence H. White, Gertrude Käsebier, Paul Strand, Auguste Rodin, and Pablo Picasso—in chronological order across all 50 regular issues and special supplements. Accompanied by Margolis’s historical overview of Stieglitz’s influential periodical and comprehensive indexes cross-referencing artists, titles, and sitters, the guide serves as an invaluable, single-volume visual index to the publication that helped establish photography as a fine art medium.

Note:  On December 19, 1902, the first issue dated January 1903 of Camera Work, the journal of the Photo-Secession edited by Alfred Stieglitz, was released in New York.  Considered by many the finest photography magazine ever published in the United States, it featured cogent articles and high quality tipped-in photogravure and half-tone reproductions by the leading Pictorialist photographers of the era throughout its 50 issues.  The last was a double issue in 1917 devoted to the work of Paul Strand.
