Minor White (1908–1976) was a major American photographer, editor, and educator who infused fine-art photography with spiritual, psychological, and metaphorical depth. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, White studied botany and poetry at the University of Minnesota before committing fully to photography during the late 1930s while working for the Works Progress Administration in Oregon. Influenced by Alfred Stieglitz’s concept of "Equivalents" as well as Zen philosophy and mysticism, White developed a singular approach that viewed images not merely as visual records, but as mirrors of internal states and metaphors for spiritual truth. Co-founder and long-time editor of the influential photography journal Aperture in 1952, he shaped generations of artists through his expressive black-and-white printmaking, sequencing of photographs into complex visual poems, and dedicated teaching posts at institutions including the California School of Fine Arts, Rochester Institute of Technology, and MIT.
