Jerry N. Uelsmann (1934–2022) was an influential American photographer and university professor celebrated as a pioneer of surrealist photomontage in fine art photography. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he earned his B.F.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology—where he studied under masters like Minor White—and later earned an M.S. and M.F.A. from Indiana University before embarking on a distinguished 38-year teaching career at the University of Florida. Long before the advent of digital editing software like Photoshop, Uelsmann gained international acclaim in the 1960s for his mastery of darkroom techniques, using multiple enlargers and glass plates to seamlessly merge distinct negatives into dreamlike, allegorical landscapes. His iconic imagery, which frequently features floating hands, rooted trees, and architectural structures fused with natural forms, challenged the prevailing tradition of straight documentary photography, establishing him as a legendary figure whose work remains housed in major museum collections worldwide.
