Gary D. Saretzky (born 1946) is an American archivist, photographer, educator, and photographic historian. Beginning his serious work in photography in 1972, Saretzky went on to teach the medium for 35 years at Mercer County Community College while simultaneously maintaining a career as an archivist. Over a career spanning more than five decades in archival work, he served as the Archivist of Monmouth County, New Jersey, from 1994 until his retirement in 2019, alongside earlier roles at Educational Testing Service and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. A scholar of 19th- and 20th-century photographic preservation and history, Saretzky has published extensively on regional photographic heritage—notably establishing ongoing research databases of 19th-century New Jersey photographers—and co-authored works on historical figures such as photographer Grant Castner. As a fine art photographer, his personal practice encompasses live blues photography, and fine art landscape, street, and documentary photography. His numerous exhibitions include his 35-year retrospective at the Rider University Art Gallery in 2007. Substantial collections of Saretzky's blues photographs are at the Trenton Free Public Library and the Blues Archive of the University of Mississippi Library.
