Divided into distinct biographical and critical sections, the volume combines an overview of Cameron’s colorful social circle—including her close friendships with figures like Alfred Lord Tennyson, Sir John Herschel, and Thomas Carlyle—with a technical analysis of her working methods and soft-focus aesthetic. The book incorporates contemporary correspondence, notes on her famous sitters, and Cameron's own autobiographical essay, Annals of My Glass House. Illustrated with extensive full-page plate reproductions, Gernsheim’s study stands as a foundational text that rescued Cameron from historical neglect and re-established her as a major figure in 19th-century art history.

Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) was a British photographer who became one of the most innovative and influential portraitists of the 19th century. Born in Calcutta, India, she did not begin her photographic career until age 48, when her daughter gifted her a camera in 1863. Working out of her home on the Isle of Wight, Cameron rejected the sharp-focus studio standards of her era in favor of dramatic lighting, close-cropped compositions, and purposeful soft-focus to capture the spiritual and emotional essence of her subjects. Over a decade and a half, she produced a legendary body of work that included portraits of leading Victorian intellectuals, artists, and scientists, as well as elaborate narrative tableaus depicting biblical, literary, and Arthurian motifs. Her pioneering approach broke from conventional commercial aesthetics and established photography as a legitimate fine-art medium.

Note:  Born in Calcutta in 1815, Julia Margaret Cameron was one of the first widely influential women photographers, noted for her soft-focus closeups of famous Victorians taken at her home on the Isle of Wight.  Cameron began her photography at age 48 and made about 900 photographs over twelve years.  In addition to portraits, she made many allegorical and illustrative images. On January 26, 1879, Cameron died in Ceylon.
