He also traveled on Navy submarines. Illustrated with 17 photographs by Hill, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge. Summary:
Yankee Photographer is a memoir-style account by the American news photographer George H. Hill, recounting his adventures and experiences over more than twenty-five years in the field of photojournalism. The book spans roughly 184 pages and blends personal anecdote with vivid descriptions of the varied assignments he photographed. It covers episodes from his early career covering newsworthy events and human interest stories—some dramatic, some humorous—to more unusual stunts and challenges he encountered while chasing images for newspapers and syndicates in the early-to-mid-20th century.
Hill’s narrative illustrates not just the technical and artistic demands of working as a press photographer in his era but also the unpredictable, often colorful situations that defined the life of a “yankee” newsman behind the lens.
